In 2019 the 10-part travel documentary 'Around the North Sea' was on television. Three Belgians – a presenter, a cameraman and a sound engineer – made an adventurous journey on foot along the North Sea coast in the countries bordering this sea. The series was about the wealth of the North Sea and its coastal inhabitants. A book of the same name has been published about this journey.
After years of hiking and mountainering I had plans to go out by bike. The journey of the Belgians inspired me to cycle around the North Sea. I looked for information on the internet and discovered that there is a 'North Sea Cycle Route' along the coasts in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The distance of this route is more than 6,600 kilometers. My enthusiasm was aroused. I decided to do the bike tour in stages starting with Germany in 2021.
